Lag screws are utilized instead of traditional wood screws when the surface being mounted needs to support a substantial load. The hexagonal head permits lag screws to be tightened with greater torque than can be applied to Phillips head screws, although a pilot hole is still necessary prior to installation. Be aware that lag screws do not accommodate nuts as they are essentially robust wood screws with threads intended to carve into timber. They are particularly suitable for decks since installation can be done without needing access to both sides of the fastener, unlike standard hex bolts that necessitate a nut on the opposite side.
