Lag screw bolts are utilized instead of conventional wood screws whenever the mounting surface needs to support a substantial load. The hexagonal head enables the lag screws to be tightened with greater torque than is possible with Phillips head screws, although a pilot hole is still necessary before installation. It’s important to note that lag screws do not accommodate nuts as they are fundamentally robust heavy-duty wood screws with threads engineered to cut into wood. They are particularly suitable for deck applications since installation can be performed without needing access to both ends of the fastener, unlike standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposing end.
